Back in Hawaii: What am I doing here?

I can get an inside-out California roll in California, but never do. So why get one at Kozo Sushi in Hawaii?

There's an L&L Hawaiian Barbecue less than a mile from our place in San Jose. But I never go there. So how come the first place we eat out at in Hawaii is L&L Barbecue?

San Jose has an established Portuguese community, but I haven't been to the Five Wounds neighborhood in years. So what reason do I have to order Portuguese sausage and eggs for breakfast in Kahala?

Okinawan sweet potatoes and tapioca are readily available in any Asian grocery in San Jose. This one from BaLe Sandwiches isn't even very good. Since when does a dessert we can make ourselves in California merit a purchase here?

I can get a sunburn just as easily at Hellyer Park in South San Jose as I can in Manoa Valley Park. So who says we have to fly over 2000 miles for the priviledge?

I think the look on their faces says it all. There is nothing like being in Hawaii, with the cool tropical breezes tempering the sultry weather, making for picture-perfect everydays that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Aloha, Nate

I have an L&L close by my place too. I never tried the one in Hawaii. I did try Rainbow Drive In after hearing a suggestion from Rose's co-worker.

I come from another island in the Pacific and we took a trip to Oahu last year. Your beautiful sculpted mountains, gorgeous beaches, all the yummy foods, and really awesome cool weather just makes your island special. We loved it and can't wait to go back.

@Lando - Rainbow Drive In is an institution.

@Susana - sometimes I wonder why I even left.

Mochiko chicken? One look and I gotta know what that is? This 'Katonk' don't know that one. And for the record, Hawaiian linguica is not the same as here, I will swear to that, no matter what the recipe, they just taste different. I do love fried rice with Portuguese Sausage.
