Spam Fried Rice
What goes in fried rice with Spam?
Tell me, tell me, Ann-I-Am!
First you start with day old rice
‘Cause fresh made rice is not so nice
Fresh made rice -- so wet, it sticks
It turns rice into rice bricks
Put that rice back in the fridge
To chill and dry, just a smidge
Lots of garlic cloves to chop
Enough to make a vampire drop!
And what’s fried rice without the eggs?
T’would be a footstool sans two legs
And then, of course, we have the Spam
Mystery meat cube in a can
What goes in a can of Spam?
Hormel says it’s just SPiced hAM
To know the truth would be quite neat
I just say, “Some Parts Are Meat.”
So, plop that block of Spam, kerplunk
And cut it into bite-sized chunks
Everything else is up to you:
Cut-up fish balls, peeled shrimp too
Couple cups of frozen veg
Any leftovers you can dredge
Up from the freezer. You might stumble
On something fun for this jumble
Shrimp, Fish Balls, Spam, Frozen Mixed Vegetables, Garlic, Eggs, Rice
Once we’ve got the fried rice charted
Now let’s get this party started!
First, heat oil in a pan
Beat three eggs and drop them in
Scramble up until they’re fried
Take them out and set aside
Frying Eggs For Spam Fried Rice
Garlic next. Fry it well
Pungent, fragrant is the smell
Spam’s the next one to go down
Fry it until it gets browned
Add the fish balls and the shrimp
Frozen veggies (not yet limp)
Frying Spam, Fish Balls, Shrimp and Veggies For Spam Fried Rice
Toss and fry, mix and churn
Move it ‘round, don’t let it burn
Until the shrimp becomes opaque
Don’t overcook, for goodness’ sake!
Fry Shrimp Until Opaque
And now, the rice. Just dump it down
Break it up and spread it ‘round
Drizzle soy and oyster sauce
Just how much? Hey, you’re the boss
Don’t forget: Spam is salty
Too much sauce would be faulty
So we say, season to taste
Make good food, not food waste
Toss that rice! Mix it in!
Clumps of rice would be a sin
You will get, if you mix it right,
A little something in each bite
Finally, add the eggs back on
Last ingredient, then you’re done
Stomach growling; time to sup
C’mon and plate this fried rice up!
Adding Fried Eggs Back to Spam Fried Rice
So there you have it: Spam Fried Rice
Tell us, Readers, but be nice
Would you eat fried rice with Spam?

Nate and Annie,
Not only can you cook, you can write poetry too! You guys are very talented. Thanks for putting all that work in the Spam Fried Rice. The pictures are beautiful. I actually make this all the time, although not quite as fancy as yours. My favorite comfort food.
I completely agree! Nice poetry...as well as cooking! And I love spam fried rice!
Dearest Ann-I-Am
This eloquent ode to rice and Spam
Everything said in cute rhyme
Makes me think you've got too much time!
*clap clap clap* Bravo!!! Looks clean and delicious!! At the Asian ghetto in Berkeley, I remember one of our favourite things to get was kimchee spam fried rice, mm!
How appropriate for Dr. Seuss's birthday!
spam fried rice looks SO good - i've never had it (and i can't quite recall what spam tastes like), so i'm a bit apprehensive but SO tempted to make it!
Beautiful pic...
Yoso-poetic! Great job with the fried rice...so nice, so nice!
Spam, I am! ;)
I ate enough of it as a kid that I am probably part Spam now.
I LOVE THIS POEM!! Bravo. And I love fried rice with Spam almost as much as I love Dr. Seuss. =) ~Krista S.
I love spam fried rice! I usually add some oyster sauce and soy :)
Love it!!! You're so gifted. This sure looks better than "Green Eggs and Ham". :-) Jane Lau
That's brilliant... the rice and the rhyme!
@all - thanks for your comments!
A clarification: Although I (Nate) signed the post with "Cheers, Ann-I-Am", it is actually my writing. I should have signed it "N-I-Am" or something like that.
@E. Thai - thanks for your comments. The beauty about fried rice is that you can put whatever you like in it!
@J - trust me, it took a LONG time to write this post!
@Jesse - Kimchee spam fried rice - yowza!
@Anonymous - you know, I had no idea it was Dr. Seuss' birthday. How serendipitous!
@Pearl - Really, you must try it!
@Carolyn - who's more Spammy, you or Meat Boy?
@Krista - thank you!
@Jane - thanks!
@Sid - thank you for the compliment!
OMG - total comfort food!!! A little kim chee either mixed in or on the side, and I'm set for dinner.
p.s. loved the cute Seuss poetry!:)
Love the poem and the photos! I'm making fried rice tonight, too, using leftover pork chops and some portuguese sausage. Can't wait.
I'm posting a Spam-related entry later on my blog. I've been meaning to do so for days and you just reminded me. I hope you'll check it out if you have the time.

Warning: There will not be delicious-looking photos.
Love spam fried rice. Make it all the time. I grew up eating spam (my moms spam casserole on my blog is my favorite) in a lot of different dishes (though never in sushi).
Love your poem, your beautiful pictures and your recipe. Thanks for sharing. You are so talented!
@Linda - I wish I had some kim chee now :-)
@Jenster - looking forward to your post!
@Wendy - thank you so much!

Love Spam Fried Rice with ABC Soup!
Cheers,

This is a great poem to teach cooking fried rice. I'll try this with my niece when she's a little older (i.e., tall enough to see over the kitchen table.) =)
Posted once--and I think I somehow lost the connection at the crucial moment. Anyway, I grew up eating spam--and grew up in Texas. My mother made it into a roast, stuffed with whole cloves. Crazy. But I still have a taste for it. I sometimes dice it up into frittatas. But I will definitely have to try it in fried rice.
This is a great and funny post that my son will sure to enjoy.
Fried rice is his thing and with this recipe, he will be a hit!
Love the poem.
Spam fried rice! Ahhhh... reminds me of my childhood days... LOVED EATING IT, except we used luncheon meat instead of spam. but now with the ban on luncheon meat... spam will do just fine!
will certainly try the recipe. love the pictures too - the food looks SO GOOD
I do so like fried rice and spam.
Thank you! Thank you! Ann-I-Am!
@Mark - hmm, frittatas! Great idea.
@chubbycheeks - I hadn't heard about a luncheon meat ban.
